Many hunters are forced, due to topographic conditions or human population, to hunt whitetail deer and black bears with a shotgun. Slug technology has certainly come a long way since the era of Foster slugs and smooth bores, which would often throw lead knuckleballs.

Browning’s new BXS line of shotgun ammunition is a definite example of modern advancements in slug design. Using an all-copper hollowpoint slug of larger diameter than the competition, with a yellow polymer tip and a specially engineered plastic sabot to best enhance the performance of that projectile, Browning’s BXS will give consistent expansion and deep penetration, all at respectable velocity.

I had a chance to shoot the 12-gauge BXS slugs at the SHOT Show, and found them to be more than accurate enough for any deer or bear hunting within sensible shotgun range, and with tolerable recoil levels.

Available in 12-gauge (one ounce slug) and 20-gauge (3/4 ounce slugs), both with a muzzle velocity of 1,600 fps. Browning has certainly developed a shotgun slug that will make slug users happier campers.
