Q: When zeroing my rifle, should I shoot several shots in rapid succession or allow the barrel to cool between shots?

A: Marksmen concerned with the utmost accuracy pause between shots when zeroing their rifles so their barrels can cool, but most hunters don’t require such precision. If you shoot three to five rounds at a comfortable pace and inspect your target between groups, your barrel should cool sufficiently. Groups from rifles with thin, sporter-weight barrels may open up as the barrel heats, but it's good to realize this at the range so you'll know what to expect from your rifle in the field if you have to take multiple shots at game.
