The stowaway rifle is pretty minimalistic really, as a good survival rifle ought to be. The principle: "Keep It Simple Stupid," comes to mind, as its clear there’s not much more than a bare-bones barrel, action and stock in its makeup. But it’s simplicity isn’t a weak point, rather, it’s the whole reason we love this firearm.

Available as a rifle model with a fixed stock, or as a pistol model, with or without a brace, the Stowaway in either configuration can be had chambered in one of two extremely versatile rounds: the 9mm or the 5.7x28mm FN. Whichever chambering you prefer to start with, know that adding the second to your survival kit can be completed by simply purchasing a new bolt-face and barrel, offered via Dark Mountain’s caliber conversion kit. And swapping is easy.

Also easy is taking this less-than-3 pound, 32-inch rig apart. By unscrewing and removing the 16 ½-inch barrel, the Stowaway rifle packs down to only 17 inches, meaning it can live in your bug-out bag and be ready to makes moves when you are. Like most “survival” guns, the Stowaway is a single-action platform, but it’s not a break-action, rather, it’s a bolt-action with a rear plunger-style hammer that’s pulled back to cock the action.

Arriving optics ready, it sports a short Pic-rail on top that makes mounting your choice of scope or red-dot sight even easier. The stowaway is also threaded, meaning you can add a suppressor to this little rig and add some stealth to your survival plan.
